Should I Be Wearing a Back Brace for my Back Pain?

If you are someone who's been struggling with back pain and are trying to decide whether or not you should use a back brace, keep reading or watch the full video HERE.

Back Braces

Back braces are great for people who have pain and especially those who have sharp, sudden back pain. This happens a lot to people who just had surgery, been in a car accident, or another kind of trauma happened to their back. Back braces wrap around the stomach and go around to the back. They give you stability and control over your back to make sure things aren’t moving where they’re not supposed to.

Back braces are good for reducing pain quickly, but if you’re someone who’s trying to heal from back pain fully or work out regularly, you wouldn’t want to use back braces for a long term solution.

Back braces work against you if:

  1. You’ve had back pain for a really long time. When your pain has been going on for a long time, the brace becomes more like a crutch and your body begins to depend on it, causing the surrounding muscles to get weak. This means that the muscles won't be able to do their job well anymore.

  2. You’re trying to lift heavy weights. Back braces aren’t supposed to substitute for stronger muscles.

  3. You’re sitting down for a long time.

How to fully heal from back pain:

Talk to a physical therapist first. These movement experts will be able to tell you what is exactly going on with your back and when to apply your back brace. These tips are going to be extremely helpful if you feel pain when you’re lifting and need a long term solution.
